At Houston School of Art & Design, our kids’ art classes (ages 4 and up) nurture each child’s creative voice by combining structured lessons with freedom to explore. Through individualzed, small-group instruction, students learn to see and render what they observe using fundamentals of drawing and painting. We emphasize realism, helping young artists build perception and confidence trough practice in media such as watercolor, tempera, pastel, colored pencil, and mixed media. 

Each student selects their own project from our curated collection of references — ranging from animals to landscapes to favorite characters and imaginative scenes. Using the grid method, students learn how to break down complex images into smaller, manageable sections to improve proportion and accuracy. Once their drawings are complete, they transfer their artwork onto illustration boards and bring it to life using the school’s professional-grade art supplies. Instructors provide step-by-step guidance and demonstrations of painting techniques on a separate board, ensuring that students can learn, practice, and then apply these skills to their own artwork. This hand-on process encourages both technical growth and creative decision-making.

Whay truly sets us apart is our personalized approach: we don’t force all students into the same path. Instead, instructors observe progress, adapt lessons, and challenge students individually so that every child grows artistically at their own speed. Whether your child is just begining or already working on advanced techniques, our goal is to foster confidence, skill, and a lifelong love for visual art.
